Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Rooted and Radiant Week Nine – Turning: Learning What Anchors Us

As you settle in today, coffee in hand, take a moment to notice how it feels to pause.

Over the past few weeks, you’ve learned a lot about where your attention naturally goes and how to return when you feel scattered. You’ve practiced turning back, again and again, without judgment.

Today, we pause to ask a deeper question – one that often becomes clear only when life feels unsteady:

What actually sustains me when things feel uncertain?

Scripture reminds us that not everything we turn toward truly nourishes us. Some things drain us slowly without us realizing it. Others promise comfort or relief, but leave us feeling restless, thin, or dry.

Psalm 1, which has been a favorite of mine for years, offers a quiet, steady picture of a different way to live. It describes a life rooted – nourished over time, held steady through changing seasons. Not frantic. Not forced. Simply planted.

Like a tree near water, we grow not by chasing the light or trying harder, but by staying close to what sustains us.

When I speak, I often use the image of a fruit tree and ask whether the tree strives or struggles to produce fruit. Of course it doesn’t. The health of the fruit flows from how deeply rooted the tree is and from the nourishment it receives. In the same way, the fruit of our lives and our faith grows out of what we are rooted in.

This week, we practice noticing what we are rooted in and gently turning toward what truly anchors us.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 1: 1-3 (NLT)

Pause and Reflect

Sit with the imagery from this Psalm. You may want to journal or reflect quietly.

You might consider:

  • What do I tend to reach for when I feel tired or overwhelmed?
  • What has been nourishing me lately and what has been draining me?
  • What might it look like to stay rooted in God’s presence this week?

Soul Care Practice – Rooted Noticing

Sit comfortably and allow your body to settle.

Notice where your body feels supported right now – the chair beneath you, your feet on the floor, your breath moving gently in and out. Invite Jesus to draw close and be present with you in these moments.

For the next few minutes, simply notice what feels steady and grounding.

If your mind wanders, gently return your attention to your breath or the feeling of being supported.

You are not trying to change anything.
You are simply noticing what it feels like to be rooted.

End by thanking God for His sustaining presence.

Pray With Me

Jesus,
Thank You for being the source of life and nourishment for my soul.
Help me notice where I am rooted and gently turn toward what sustains me.
Teach me to stay planted in You when life feels uncertain.
I trust You to steady me.
In Your precious name,
Amen.

Carry It With You

As you move through your day, pause occasionally and ask yourself:

What is nourishing me right now?

Let that simple question guide you back toward what gives life.

As you finish your coffee and this time with Jesus, remember – growth happens quietly when roots are deep. Don’t forget that you’re invited to join in on discussion if you find it helpful at the Mindful Mondays – Time with Jesus Facebook Group. You can get connected to it HERE. I’ll save you a seat again next Monday as we continue learning how to turn toward the light together. Until then I hope you have a sweet week walking with Jesus!
