There is something quietly beautiful about a sunflower’s daily rhythm. At dawn it lifts its face toward the light, and then, without hurry or strain, it follows the sun as it moves across the sky. Scientists call this heliotropism, but the spiritual parallel is what captures me because underneath that gentle turning is a truth our souls were made for.
We were created to orient our lives toward the Light of the World – Jesus.
When we turn toward Jesus – even in small and ordinary moments – something shifts inside us. The pressure to hold everything together loosens. The noise quiets. The heaviness lifts just enough for hope to breathe again. Turning toward Jesus is not about effort or perfection. It is about direction. Posture. Attentiveness. Choosing again and again to follow the One who loves us and leads us with such kindness.
Following the Son is a way of living that says:
“My eyes are on You, Jesus. Lead me, and I will follow.”
This simple rhythm becomes a steady practice of soul care that roots us in His love, renews our minds, and keeps our hearts anchored in Him throughout the day.
Sunflowers turn because they are designed to seek the light. Our souls turn because we were designed to seek the Lord. When we set our attention on Him, even briefly, His light reaches the shadowed places we did not realize were tired.
Scripture speaks to this clearly:
- “Fixing our eyes on Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2)
- “I have set the Lord always before me…” (Psalm 16:8)
- “We are being transformed as we behold Him.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Each passage paints a picture of a heart returning to Jesus again and again. A quiet turning. A continual yes.

Three Simple Practices to Help You Follow Him Throughout Your Day
These soul care practices do not require perfect circumstances. They simply help your heart turn toward Jesus as you move through life. I pray they bless you as you practice them.
1. Breath Prayer
A gentle way to reorient the heart in moments of stress, stillness, or transition.
Inhale: “Jesus, You are here.”
Exhale: “I turn my heart to You.”
Let your breathing slow. Let your attention soften toward Him. Let this prayer be your quiet returning toward Jesus throughout the day.
2. Scripture Gazing
Choose a scripture, perhaps one of the ones shared above.
Read it slowly three times.
Pause between readings. Notice what draws your attention.
Let that word or phrase become your prayer for the day. Carry it with you as you go about your day. This is how the heart keeps turning toward Him.
3. Gratitude at First Light and Last Light
Gratitude gently reorients us toward God’s goodness and steady presence.
Morning
Name three small gifts you notice right now.
Let each one lift your gaze toward Jesus.
Evening
Look back over your day.
Where did you sense His nearness?
What grace came unexpectedly?
What moment brought comfort, joy, or strength?
Gratitude opens the heart to see the light that was present all along.
Reflect on the Following
Take a few minutes with these questions:
- Where is your attention naturally turning these days?
- What has been pulling your gaze away from Jesus?
- What changes inside you when you pause and turn toward Him?
- Which simple practice feels most accessible for you today?
- Where do you sense Jesus inviting you to follow Him more closely?
Pray With Me
Jesus, Light of the World, I turn my heart toward You.
Quiet my mind, steady my spirit, and help me follow You in every moment.
Thank You for being near, for guiding me gently, and for offering rest where I am weary.
Teach me to keep turning again and again toward Your love, Your wisdom, and Your presence.
In Your mighty name, Amen.
