When the Soul Forgets to Turn

Every sunflower begins its life by learning to turn toward the sun. In its young and tender stages, it follows the light faithfully from east to west, letting the warmth guide its growth and strengthen its stem. But there are times when a sunflower becomes weighed down by weather, wind, or the sheer heaviness of growing. Its head droops. Its posture shifts. It forgets, for a moment, how to turn.

Our souls are not all that different.

There are seasons when we turn toward Jesus easily. Our hearts respond quickly to His presence. We sense His leading. We trust His voice. And then there are seasons when the weight of life settles in – Fatigue, sorrow, disappointment, busy schedules, or unexpected loss stretch us thin. Sometimes we drift. Sometimes we numb. Sometimes we simply stop paying attention. The soul forgets to turn.

For many women, these seasons feel like failure. We think we should be stronger by now or more disciplined or less easily shaken. Yet forgetting to turn is part of the human experience. It does not disqualify us. It does not distance us from the heart of Jesus. It simply reveals our need for Him.

The good news is that while young sunflowers may forget to turn, the sun never forgets to rise. Light always returns to them. And the warmth coaxes them back into alignment.

Jesus does the same with us. He comes toward us with kindness. He draws near without accusation. He calls our names softly. One of my favorite things about Jesus is that His light meets us right where we are, not where we think we should be. It is in that honesty that He shows up and does what only He can do to restore our hearts.

There are many reasons our hearts drift. Sometimes it is exhaustion. Sometimes discouragement. Sometimes the accumulation of small, unprocessed emotions that we brush aside because there is too much to do and too many people to care for.

And sometimes we forget to turn simply because we stop noticing our need for Him. We begin to run on autopilot. We manage. We cope. We accomplish. Yet the deep places of our souls go untouched. Jesus is not startled by our drifting. He knows our frame. He remembers that we are dust and He keeps inviting us to return.

A sunflower does not need a complicated strategy to recover its orientation. It only needs to lift its face.

And so do we.

Returning to Jesus is not about guilt or performance. It is about turning our hearts, even slightly, toward the Light who has never stopped shining.

A whispered prayer is enough.
A deep breath that says, “Jesus, I need you” is enough.
A quiet moment of honesty is enough.
A single scripture that lifts our gaze is enough.

He responds to the smallest turn.

A Few Scriptures for Reorientation

  • Psalm 34:5
  • Isaiah 30:15
  • 1 John 1:9

Let these passages help your heart lift toward Him again.

A Simple Soul Care Practice for This Week: Centering Prayer

Put your hand on your heart and speak this in your soul as you breathe: “Jesus, You are with me. I invite You into this moment.”

Let this meet you in the middle of your ordinary routine and draw your focus back toward Him.

Reflect on the Following

  • What has felt heavy in your life lately?
  • Where do you notice signs of drift in your soul?
  • What emotions have you been carrying quietly rather than bringing into the presence of Jesus?
  • What small turn could you make today that would reorient your heart toward Him?

Pray With Me

Jesus, thank you for being patient with my wandering heart. When I forget to turn, your light still reaches me. You do not shame me, You draw me near. Today I lift my face toward you again. Warm me with your presence. Steady me with your grace. Restore the places that feel tired or weighed down. Lead my soul back into alignment with Your love. I invite You to move in my life today. In Your mighty name, Amen.
