Living Loved with Tammy Gerhard

Beholding the Light, Becoming the Light

There is a moment in the life of a sunflower when all the quiet, hidden work beneath the surface begins to reveal itself. After months of rooting, stretching, strengthening, and turning toward the sun, the flower enters a phase called anthesis. It is the season when the sunflower fully blooms. Its face is open. Its form is complete. Its beauty is unmistakable.

Anthesis marks the time when the sunflower has grown into the purpose for which it was created. It no longer needs to track the sun hour by hour the way it did in its early formation. Instead, a mature sunflower becomes steady. It turns to the east and remains fixed, allowing the warmth of the morning light to prepare it for fruitfulness. This position attracts pollinators so that life can multiply far beyond that single flower.

This image speaks deeply to our lifelong walk with Jesus. We spend many seasons of our lives learning how to turn toward Him. We practice, we falter, we turn back again. Yet over time, as we behold Him, He matures us. Our roots strengthen. Our posture steadies. We begin to understand more clearly who He is and who we are in Him. We learn to live loved. And like a sunflower reaching anthesis, we enter seasons where our lives reflect the quiet but unmistakable bloom of grace.

Scripture tells us that transformation comes by beholding Jesus. As we consistently turn our hearts toward Him, something begins to take shape within us. The Spirit forms His character, His peace, His gentleness, and His truth in the hidden places of our lives. And slowly, steadily, we begin to resemble the One we love.

This is the invitation of anthesis. It is the invitation to live as women who are filled with His Spirit and remain steadily rooted in Jesus so that His light can shine THROUGH US.

When a sunflower reaches anthesis, its bloom is not only beautiful. It becomes fruitful. It becomes a place where life grows, multiplies, and blesses others. Ordinary ground becomes a point of light.

The same is true for us. The places where we live and work, the moments that feel small or overlooked, the quiet conversations, the daily rhythms, the ordinary decisions. These are the very places where the light of Christ can shine through us and bring life to others.

You carry His light wherever you go.

When your heart remains turned toward Him, His presence begins to radiate through you in ways you may never fully see. But others will. They will feel the warmth of His love in your kindness, your steadiness, your courage, your compassion, and your joy.

A Few Scriptures to Begin With:

  • 2 Corinthians 3:18
  • Psalm 34:5
  • John 8:12

These passages invite us to gaze at Jesus and allow His light to shape us from within.

A Simple Soul Care Practice for this Week: Breath Prayer

As you inhale: Jesus, you are here.
As you exhale: I turn my heart to you.

Let this anchor you in His nearness and peace throughout the day.

Reflect on the Following

  • Where do you sense Jesus inviting you to turn toward Him with greater steadiness or trust?
  • What parts of your life feel like they are in the quiet, hidden stages of growth?
  • Where do you see signs of anthesis, places where God is bringing something into bloom?
  • How might you intentionally face the Light each morning this week?

Pray With Me

Jesus, thank you for being the true Light of my life. Thank you for all of the ways you are at work in the hidden places and for the seasons when you bloom your love in and through my life .
