Advent invites us into a season of waiting, listening, and watching for the God who comes near. Hope is not a fragile wish or a thin optimism about the future. Hope is the confident assurance that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He has promised. For many of us, this time of year carries both beauty and ache. We feel the joy of the season, but we also carry unspoken longings, unanswered prayers, and weary places that need the light of Christ.
Jesus steps into this very space. Into the darkness of waiting. Into the quiet ache of longing. Into the places where we feel unsure or unseen. He comes with a hope that is steady and present, a hope that carries us when we feel unable to carry ourselves.
As we begin this Advent season, we turn our hearts toward the One who enters our world with light. Jesus invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember that true hope is not something we create – It is something we receive.

I remember when I first discovered Romans 15:13 and chose it for our family Christmas card that year. It struck me as the perfect prayer for each person those cards would reach, because it spoke so clearly of what God alone can do in a life. Hope is not something we muster up. Hope is a gift from God. From that first moment many years ago, I have returned to this verse again and again. I have printed it on our Christmas cards year after year because, no matter how much time passes, it remains my prayer for every recipient – That they would receive the gift of Jesus. That the power of His Holy Spirit would fill them to overflowing with the kind of hope that only He can give.
Truth to Hold Onto
Romans 15:13
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Isaiah 9:2
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
Psalm 130:5-6
“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.”
Soul Care Practice: Breath Prayer of Hope
Find a quiet place to sit. Take a slow breath in and gently pray: “Jesus, You are my hope.”
As you exhale, pray: “I place my trust in You.”
Repeat this several times, letting your body and mind rest in the presence of Jesus.

Pray With Me
Jesus, as I enter this Advent season, open my heart to the hope You bring. Shine Your light into the places where I feel weary or unsure. Teach me to trust You with my longings and to rest in Your presence. Fill me with Your hope, steady my steps, and prepare my heart to receive You in fresh and meaningful ways and may You touch and impact the lives of those I love as only You can. In Your mighty name, Amen.
