Living Loved with Tammy Gerhard

Preparing Our Hearts for Peace

Advent invites us to pause in the middle of a season that often feels hurried, noisy, and full. While the world around us moves quickly toward celebration, many of us carry a quiet longing for peace. Our minds feel scattered, our schedules stretch thin, and our hearts grow tired beneath the weight of what this season brings. Yet the invitation of Advent is simple and gentle. It calls us to slow down and breathe in the presence of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, who comes near to steady us.

The peace Jesus gives is not the same as the peace the world attempts to offer. It is deeper, truer, and more enduring. His peace meets us in our pressure points. It settles the soul and anchors the heart. His peace is His presence, and He gives it freely.

Peace is not the absence of problems. Peace is the nearness of Jesus. His peace does not falter when circumstances become difficult or when the weight of life feels heavy. Instead, His peace works quietly from the inside out, calming our anxious thoughts and steadying our hearts.

The Lord used Isaiah 26:3 in my life during a profound season of suffering. My mom was gravely ill and in the last weeks of her life, and my sister, who was also like a mother to me, was battling cancer in the same hospital. I was making countless trips to and from the ICU over an hour from home while caring for two small children. One Sunday, exhausted and emotionally worn, I sat alone in the corner of the elementary school gymnasium our church was meeting in. I did not want to sit among people because I feared my frayed nerves would give way and release in uncontrollable tears.

As worship began, I sensed the Lord prompting me to sit and open my Bible. As I slowly turned the pages of Isaiah, one verse seemed to rise from the page as if illuminated. “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.” As I read it, I sensed the gentle whisper of the Lord in my heart. “Tammy, will you trust me? Will you believe that I am who I say I am and that I do what I say I do? That I am with you AND your mom and that I am for you in all of this?” Something shifted in me in that moment. I whispered, “Yes, Lord,” and tears began to flow as I stood in worship with my hands lifted high.

I walked through the rest of that season of grief assured of God’s presence and in His presence, I found peace. The circumstances had not changed, but I had. His peace was carrying me.

As we enter the second week of Advent, we are invited to allow that same peace to lead us. To unclench what we have been holding too tightly. To rest in the truth that Jesus is with us, for us, and faithfully working in every detail of our lives.

Truth to Hold Onto

Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.”

John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.”

Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Soul Care Practice: Stillness Before the Lord

Find a quiet space where you can sit without interruption. Rest your hands in your lap. Take a few slow breaths.

Repeat softly, either silently or aloud: “Jesus, You are here.”

Let that truth settle into the places where anxiety has taken root. Allow His presence to calm your mind and steady your spirit.

Reflect on the Following

• What is currently stealing or unsettling your peace?
• Where might Jesus be inviting you to slow down or surrender?
• What would it look like to let His presence anchor you this week?

Pray With Me

Jesus, thank You for the peace You give. Quiet my heart where it feels troubled. Steady my mind where it feels overwhelmed. Teach me to rest in Your presence and to trust that You are with me in every moment of this season. Fill me with Your peace, and let that peace shape the way I walk, love, and trust You this week. In Your faithful name, Amen.
