Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Rooted and Radiant Week Seven – Turning: Learning Where the Mind Goes

As you settle in today, maybe you’re holding a warm mug. Maybe the house is still, or maybe it’s already loud and full. Either way, you’ve carved out this small pocket of time to be present.

Before we rush into anything, pause for a moment and notice where your mind already is.

Is it planning the rest of the day?
Replaying a conversation?
Holding onto something unresolved?

So much of our inner life happens automatically. Our thoughts move quickly, often without our permission, pulling us toward worry, comparison, or mental clutter before we even realize it.

Last week, we practiced turning toward Jesus – learning that we can gently reorient ourselves again and again. This week, we bring that same gentleness to our thought life.

Because turning toward Jesus is not only about where we look, but where our minds rest.

Scripture reminds us that our lives are already secure in Christ. We do not turn our minds toward Him to earn peace, but because peace is already available to us there. When our thoughts scatter, we are not failing; we are being invited to return.

Sunflowers turn toward the light because it is where nourishment comes from. In the same way, our minds find rest not by forcing calm, but by gently returning to the One who holds us.

This week, we practice noticing where our thoughts go and practicing how to return them to Jesus.

Scripture Reading

Colossians 3:1–3 (NIV)

Pause and Reflect

Take a few moments to sit with what you noticed from Scripture. You may want to journal your response or reflect quietly.

You might consider:

  • Where does my mind tend to go when I’m tired or overwhelmed?
  • What thoughts feel most persistent right now?
  • What would it look like for my mind to rest in Christ today?

Soul Care Practice – Noticing and Naming Thoughts

Find a comfortable seated position and take a slow breath in and out.

For the next minute or two, simply notice your thoughts as they arise. There is no need to analyze them or push them away.

When a thought comes, quietly name it with a gentle word such as planning, worry, remembering, or anticipating.

After naming the thought, imagine placing it in Jesus’ care – like setting something down rather than carrying it.

You don’t need to solve the thought.
You don’t need to judge it.

Just notice, name, and release.

If another thought comes, repeat the same process.

End by taking one slow breath and thanking Jesus for holding what you no longer need to carry right now.

Pray With Me

Jesus,
You know the thoughts that fill my mind before I even speak them.
When my thoughts scatter or feel heavy, help me return them to You.
Teach me to let my mind rest where my life is already secure—in You.
Thank You for holding what I release.
In Your precious name,
Amen.

Carry It With You

As you move through your day, notice moments when your thoughts begin to race or loop.

When you catch it, gently pause and pray:

Jesus, I place this thought in Your care.

Let that simple release become a way of returning your mind to Him.

As you finish your coffee and this time with Jesus, remember – learning where your mind goes is not about control, but about return. This isn’t a performance; it’s a relationship.

If you’d like a place to continue the conversation, I’ve created a Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Facebook group where we’re walking through these rhythms together. You’re warmly invited to join us HERE.
Whether you choose to read quietly or share openly, you’re welcome.

I’ll save you a seat again next Monday as we continue learning how to turn toward the light together. Until then, may Jesus meet you gently in the ordinary moments of your days.
