Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Rooted and Radiant Week Eight – Turning: Learning How to Return

As you settle in for another week, maybe your coffee mug is warm in your hands. Maybe it’s been reheated once already. Either way, I’m so glad that you chose to show up – that matters.

If you’re anything like me, so much of life quietly pulls at your attention. We turn toward responsibilities, conversations, worries, and expectations without even realizing it. Often, by the time we notice how scattered we feel, we’re already tired.

When we’re tired and overwhelmed, it can start to feel like we’re too far in the weeds. We may think, maybe I should just give up or give in to whatever is pulling at me. From there, guilt can creep in. We tell ourselves that if we were better, more healed, more “godly,” we wouldn’t be here in the first place — or we would know how to fix it.

One of the gifts of walking with Jesus is learning that returning doesn’t require retracing every step or fixing what went wrong. It simply means re-orienting ourselves toward the One who is already near.

Last week, we noticed where our minds tend to go. This week, we practice something different.

This week is about learning how to return – not by analyzing ourselves or piling on guilt, but by gently choosing where we place our attention. It’s about recognizing that only by turning toward Jesus and inviting Him to re-orient our focus can we grow into who He is forming us to be.

Scripture reminds us that stability does not come from holding everything together or doing things perfectly, but from keeping our eyes on the Lord. When we do, we are not shaken – not because life becomes easier, but because we are no longer carrying it alone.

Like a sunflower that turns again and again toward the sun throughout the day, returning is not a sign of failure. It is simply how growth happens.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 62:5–6 (NIV)

Pause and Reflect

Take a few moments to sit with what you noticed from Scripture. You may want to journal or reflect quietly.

You might consider:

  • What tends to pull my attention away from Jesus most easily?
  • Where do I notice myself feeling scattered or off-center right now?
  • What helps me return to a sense of steadiness in God’s presence?

Soul Care Practice – Re-centering the Gaze

Sit comfortably and allow your body to settle.

Choose a simple focal point in front of you – the rim of your mug, a window, a candle, or even a spot on the table. Let your eyes rest there naturally, without effort.

For a minute or two, simply notice what it feels like to let your attention land in one place.

When your focus drifts – and it will – gently bring your gaze back again.

Quietly pray:
Jesus, I turn my attention toward You.

You don’t need to hold your focus perfectly. Each gentle return is part of the practice.

After a few moments, close your eyes and imagine Jesus beside you – steady, present, unhurried.

Sit quietly for a breath or two, then thank Him for meeting you here.

Pray With Me

Jesus,
Thank You that You are near, even when I feel distracted or tired.
Teach me how to return to You without striving or shame.
Help me place my attention where my heart finds rest.
I trust You to steady me when I feel scattered.
In Your precious name,
Amen.

Carry It With You

As you move through your day, notice moments when your attention feels pulled in many directions.

When that happens, quietly remind yourself:
The Lord is near. I will not be shaken.
Let that simple truth guide you back, even for a moment.

As you finish your coffee and this time with Jesus, please remember that returning is not something you master; it’s a rhythm you come back to, again and again. Jesus continually invites you to turn toward the light that sustains you – He is that light.

If you’d like a place to continue the conversation and share what you’re noticing, I’ve created a Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Facebook group where we’re walking through these rhythms together. You’re warmly invited to join us HERE.

I’ll save you a seat again next Monday as we continue learning how to turn toward the light together. Until then, may you continue inviting Jesus to meet you in the ordinary moments of your days.
