There are seasons when growth is easy to see. A prayer is answered, a door opens, or we begin to notice that we are responding differently than we once did. We can look back and recognize places where Jesus has clearly been at work and say,
“There. I can see it!”
Then there are the other seasons, the ones where we have been praying and waiting and trying to remain faithful, but very little seems to be changing.
Those can be some of the hardest places to remain, not necessarily because we have stopped believing that God is good, but because we cannot see what He is doing, we start wondering whether anything is happening beneath the surface at all.
As we continue following the life of the sunflower, there is something beautiful here for us to remember. Long before we ever see the flower, there is activity happening that our eyes cannot detect. Roots are stretching deeper, nutrients are being absorbed, and life is forming beneath the soil before anything appears above it.
The absence of visible growth does not mean the absence of growth.
I have had to learn this with Jesus more than once. There was a season when I sensed Him asking me to release something I deeply loved, a place where I had invested so much of myself. Walking away did not immediately reveal what was coming next. There was no beautifully laid-out plan waiting for me on the other side. There was simply an invitation to trust Him.

I wish I could tell you that obedience immediately made everything clear, but it did not. For a while, I had to live in the space between what Jesus had asked me to release and what He had not yet revealed. That space can feel deeply uncomfortable because we like to know where things are going. We like evidence that our obedience is producing something. We like being able to see the fruit of our prayers and know that the seeds we have planted are actually growing.
Sometimes Jesus asks us to trust what He is doing before He allows us to see it.
Looking back now, I can recognize that He was doing far more in that hidden season than I understood at the time. He was changing me, loosening my grip on things I had depended upon, and teaching me to recognize His voice and follow Him without needing to know the whole plan. Eventually, new things did grow, but first came the hidden work.
Maybe you are in one of those seasons right now. You have been praying for someone you love, but you do not see change. You have been asking Jesus to heal something within you, but some days it feels as though you are still wrestling with the same things. You have been faithfully showing up, loving people, serving, parenting, leading, creating, or simply trying to take the next right step, and you cannot yet see what any of it is becoming.
This week, the invitation is not to manufacture evidence of growth. It is to trust the Gardener.

Pause and Reflect
I love the words Jesus gives us in Mark: “the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens.” There is something freeing in that image because the farmer participates, but he does not control the process. He scatters the seed, tends what has been entrusted to him, and then much of the growing happens beyond his ability to see or manage.
We are often asked to live in that same tension. There are places where Jesus invites us to participate faithfully, and then asks us to trust Him with the part we cannot see or control. That can be difficult, especially when what we care about matters deeply to us, but remaining with Jesus means learning that our security does not have to come from visible results. It can come from knowing the One who is tending what we have placed in His hands.
Take a few quiet moments with Jesus and consider:
- Where in your life are you struggling because you cannot yet see growth?
- Is there something you have faithfully prayed for, planted, nurtured, or surrendered that still seems hidden beneath the surface?
- What happens inside you when you cannot see evidence that things are changing?
- Could Jesus be inviting you to trust His work rather than measure your faithfulness by visible results?
Soul Care Practice: Trust Statements
This week, instead of trying to figure out what God is doing, we are going to practice trusting Him in what we cannot see. Begin by naming one area where you are waiting for growth. You might simply write, “Jesus, I cannot see what You are doing in ____________.”
Then begin writing a few simple statements of trust. They do not need to sound impressive or overly spiritual. Let them be honest and personal.
Jesus, I trust that You are present even when I cannot see what You are doing.
I trust that hidden does not mean absent.
I trust that You can work beneath the surface in ways I cannot measure.
I trust You with the timing of the harvest.
I trust You with the people I love.
I trust that my role is faithfulness, not control.
I trust that You are the One who makes things grow.
Choose one statement that feels especially important and return to it throughout the week. Not as a way of convincing yourself that everything will turn out exactly as you hope, but as a way of bringing your heart back to Jesus when uncertainty begins to pull you away.
Carry It With You
This week, pay attention to the places where you are tempted to dig up the seed. Maybe you keep checking for progress, replaying the same situation over and over in your mind, or trying to force an outcome because waiting feels too vulnerable.
When you notice that happening, come back to this simple prayer:
“Jesus, I cannot see what You are doing here, but I trust You with what is growing beneath the surface.“
Then take the next faithful step that belongs to you and leave the growing to Him.
There are things Jesus is doing in us, through us, and around us that we may not recognize for a very long time. Some seeds take longer than we expected, some fruit develops quietly, and some prayers are being answered in ways we cannot yet recognize. Remaining means we keep turning toward Jesus even when there is nothing visible to prove that growth is happening, because our hope has never rested in what we can see. It rests in Him.
Prayer
Jesus,
There are places in my life where I want so badly to see what You are doing. I want reassurance that the prayers matter, the obedience matters, the waiting matters, and the seeds I have planted are growing.
Help me trust You when I cannot see beneath the surface. Teach me to remain faithful without trying to control the outcome, and remind me that You are present in the hidden places and that Your work is not limited by what I can understand or measure.
Show me what belongs to me today, and give me the grace to leave the rest in Your hands.
I trust You with the seed, the soil, the growing, and the harvest.
In Your precious name, Amen.
Until Next Monday…
As you move through this week, remember that you do not have to see the growth to trust that Jesus is at work. Keep showing up, keep remaining close, and keep placing what you cannot control back into His hands.
If something from this week stays with you, I would love to hear about it. You can share in the comments.
Until next Monday, keep choosing trust over what you can see, and keep making space to remain with Jesus.
