Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Rooted and Radiant – Week 42 Multiplying: Living What You’ve Learned

There comes a point in our walk with Jesus when the things He has been teaching us begin to move from something we know into something we live.

We may have read the Scripture many times. We may understand the principle and even be able to explain it clearly to someone else. Still, there is a difference between knowing what Jesus says and allowing His words to shape the way we respond when life becomes difficult, relationships become complicated, or obedience costs us something.

That difference has stayed with me for years.

During my time as a guidance counselor at a Christian school, I once sat with a young man who was deeply frustrated. He had grown up in a Christian home and had been surrounded by Scripture for most of his life. He knew far more of the Bible than I had known at his age, yet he was struggling and could not understand why all that knowledge did not seem to be helping him.

As I listened to him, something became very clear to me. The issue was not whether he knew enough Scripture. He knew plenty. The deeper question was whether what he knew was becoming something he was actually learning to live.

I had not grown up with the same kind of biblical knowledge. I did not begin seriously reading Scripture until my twenties, so in many ways this young man knew far more than I did. What had become important to me, though, was approaching God’s Word with a desire to respond to it. When Jesus showed me something, I wanted to learn how to live differently because of it.

That conversation has never really left me.

We can accumulate a great deal of information about Jesus without allowing Him to transform the way we live with Him. Scripture was never meant simply to fill our minds with information. God’s Word invites us into relationship, response, and obedience. Jesus teaches us truth so that truth can begin shaping our thoughts, choices, relationships, and everyday lives.

This becomes especially important as we continue through the Multiplying phase of our Rooted and Radiant journey. Last week we talked about passing on what Jesus has taught us. This week takes us one step deeper because one of the most powerful ways we pass something on is simply by living it.

People may forget the advice we give them, but they often remember what they watched us live.

They notice the way we respond when we are disappointed. They notice whether we listen well, whether we apologize, whether we forgive, whether we remain kind when it would be easier not to, and whether the Jesus we talk about seems present in the way we actually live.

Multiplication does not only happen when we teach someone a truth. It happens when truth becomes visible in us.

Scripture

James 1:22-25, NLT

John 13:17, NIV

Pause and Reflect

James gives us such a practical picture of what it means to receive God’s Word. Scripture becomes like a mirror that helps us see what is true, not simply so we can admire what we have learned, but so we can respond to what Jesus is showing us.

Sometimes that response is very small. We read about forgiveness and realize there is someone we need to release. We read about gentleness and recognize the tone we have been using with someone we love. We read about trusting God and notice how tightly we have been gripping a situation we cannot control. We read about loving our neighbor and suddenly become aware of the person right in front of us whom we have been too busy to notice.

Those moments matter because discipleship happens there, in the space between hearing what Jesus says and choosing to walk with Him in it.

Take a few quiet moments with Jesus and consider:

  • What is something Jesus has been teaching you recently that He may be inviting you to live more fully?
  • Is there a truth you know well intellectually that has been harder to practice in everyday life?
  • Where might someone already be learning something about Jesus simply by watching the way you live?
  • Is there one small act of obedience Jesus may be inviting you into this week?

Soul Care Practice: Live It and Share It

This week, choose one thing Jesus has genuinely been teaching you. Keep it simple. You are not trying to summarize everything you have learned or find something impressive to share.

Maybe He has been teaching you to slow down and listen. Perhaps He has been teaching you to trust Him with an outcome, forgive more freely, receive His love, respond with gentleness, or remain present instead of rushing ahead.

Ask yourself two questions:

How can I live this today?

Is there someone with whom I could naturally share what Jesus has been teaching me?

Then look for one opportunity to do both.

Maybe someone shares a struggle that reminds you of something Jesus recently taught you, and you simply say, “I have been learning something about this too.” Perhaps a younger believer asks how you handle a difficult situation, and rather than giving a polished answer, you share one honest thing Jesus has been teaching you. Maybe no words are necessary at all, and the practice is simply choosing to live differently in a situation where someone else will quietly see it.

Teaching does not always happen from the front of a room. Much of discipleship happens around tables, during car rides, over cups of coffee, in kitchens, in text messages, and through ordinary conversations between people who are simply willing to share what Jesus is teaching them.

Carry It With You

As you move through this week, try not to measure spiritual growth by how much you know. Pay attention instead to the places where what you know is beginning to become part of the way you live.

You may notice yourself pausing before reacting. You may choose kindness where irritation used to come quickly or find yourself returning to Jesus sooner when fear begins to rise. Maybe you will recognize an opportunity to share a truth that once helped you with someone who needs it now.

Those small moments may not feel dramatic, yet they are often where transformation becomes visible.

Jesus is not simply teaching us so that we can know more about Him. He is forming us into people who increasingly live with Him, respond like Him, and carry His love into the lives of others.

What we live often teaches more than what we say.

Prayer

Jesus,

Thank You for Your Word and for the ways You continue to teach me through it. Keep me from being satisfied with simply knowing what is true. Help me allow Your truth to reach into the places where I make choices, respond to people, carry disappointment, navigate relationships, and live my ordinary days.

Show me where You are inviting me to respond to something You have already taught me. Give me the courage to obey You in the small places, even when no one else sees.

As You continue forming me, let my life quietly point others toward You. Give me opportunities to share what You have taught me naturally and humbly, not as someone who has everything figured out, but as someone who is still walking with You and learning along the way.

In Your precious name, Amen.

Until Next Monday…

This week, pay attention to the places where Jesus gives you an opportunity to practice something He has already taught you. You may discover that the lesson becomes much deeper when it moves from the page into your actual life.

Someone else may be watching more closely than you realize, not looking for perfection, but for a picture of what it looks like to keep walking with Jesus in real life.

Until next Monday, keep listening to what Jesus is teaching you, keep responding when He invites you to take the next faithful step, and let the truth He is forming in you become something others can see and receive.
