Encouragement For The Journey

Mindful Mondays: Time With Jesus Rooted and Radiant Week 44: Multiplying – Learning to Be Content

I am becoming more aware of how easily my thoughts can settle on the things I wish were different. I can have so much to be thankful for and still find my attention drawn toward an unanswered prayer, a difficult relationship, or something I hoped would look different by now. In those moments, I ask Jesus to give me His eyes for my situation and a heart of thanksgiving for the life He has given me.

Sometimes I notice how much I have attached my peace to a particular outcome. I am waiting for an answer, a change, or a sense that something has finally been settled. Without realizing it, I begin treating joy as something I will be able to receive once that happens.

There are things I still hope for and prayers I continue to bring before Jesus. Some circumstances carry real sadness. Yet I am learning that I can rest in God’s goodness and presence right here, trusting that He is at work in and through what I cannot yet understand.

That trust helps me become patiently content. I can wait for something I desire while receiving what He has already given me. I can walk through uncertainty and still experience joy in Him because Jesus is with me in the middle of it.

Sometimes the prayer I need is very simple: “Jesus, give me Your eyes for my situation. Help me see what I am missing.”

When I am disappointed, my attention can become fixed on one part of my life. A strained relationship or an unanswered question can occupy so much space that I stop noticing the goodness surrounding it. I need Jesus to help me see more fully: the people who love me, the provision I have received, the opportunities before me, and the ways He continues to meet me in ordinary days.

I also need His help to recognize what He may be forming in me. There are seasons when the work is slow and uncomfortable. I am learning patience when I would prefer an answer, dependence when I would rather feel capable, and gratitude while something precious remains unresolved. I may not understand everything happening around me, but I can trust Him to keep working in my heart and guiding the way I live.

I want a heart of thanksgiving for the life He has given me, even while I bring Him my hopes for what may yet be.

Paul’s words about contentment encourage me because he describes something he learned. Contentment grew through his experience of walking with Christ in very different circumstances. He knew what it meant to have enough and what it meant to be in need. Through it all, he was learning to depend on the strength Jesus supplied.

That gives me room to keep learning, too. When I notice comparison, disappointment, or impatience rising within me, I can bring those responses to Jesus. I can ask Him to help me receive this day with gratitude and discover the joy of His presence within it.

As we continue through our Multiplying journey, this matters for the people around us as well. The way we receive our lives shapes the atmosphere we carry into our homes, relationships, and everyday conversations. As thanksgiving takes root in us, others may begin to see what it looks like to enjoy God’s goodness while life is still unfinished.

Scripture

Philippians 4:4–9, NIV

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, NIV

Pause and Reflect

In Philippians, Paul brings together rejoicing, prayer, thanksgiving, and the practice of directing our attention toward what is true and good. Later in the passage, he speaks about learning contentment through changing circumstances and receiving strength from Christ.

There is something practical here for our ordinary lives. We can bring our requests to God with thanksgiving. We can pay attention to what we allow our minds to dwell on. We can practice receiving His care in the circumstances before us, depending on Him for the strength we need.

Paul’s invitation to give thanks in all circumstances also leaves room for honesty. We can grieve what is painful and ask God for help while thanking Him for His presence, His provision, and the goodness we can recognize. Thanksgiving helps us make room for more of the truth about our lives.

I need that wider view. When I ask Jesus for His eyes, I am asking Him to help me see beyond the part of my situation that has captured all my attention. I want to recognize the life He has entrusted to me and be present enough to receive it.

Take a few quiet moments with Jesus and consider:

  • Where have you been thinking, “I will be happier or more at peace when…”?
  • Is there a disappointment that has made it difficult to notice goodness in other parts of your life?
  • What might Jesus help you see if you asked for His eyes for your situation?
  • Where can you recognize His presence or His work, even while you are waiting?
  • What about the life you have today can you sincerely thank Him for?

Soul Care Practice: Receiving the Life Before You

This week, choose one ordinary moment each day to pause with Jesus. It might be while you drink your morning coffee, step outside, prepare a meal, or settle into bed.

Begin with this prayer:

“Jesus, give me Your eyes for my life today. Help me recognize Your goodness, receive Your presence, and see what You have already given me.“

Take a moment to acknowledge anything you wish were different. You can bring that desire honestly into His presence without needing to resolve it before continuing.

Then look closely at the day you are actually living. Notice one person, one provision, and one ordinary experience for which you can give thanks. Be specific. You might thank Him for a conversation that helped you feel connected, enough food to prepare dinner, or a few quiet minutes in the afternoon sunlight.

Consider where He may be inviting you to participate in His work today. Is there someone to enjoy, an opportunity to serve, or something good you have been overlooking while waiting for life to change?

If it helps, write a few sentences beginning with:

Today, in the life You have given me, I thank You for…

Let your thanksgiving lead into enjoyment. Linger over the conversation, receive the kindness, or take a moment to appreciate what is in front of you. Allow yourself to experience joy with Jesus in the middle of this day.

Carry It With You

As you move through this week, notice when your attention begins drifting toward the life you wish you had. Perhaps you are imagining a different season, comparing your circumstances with someone else’s, or rehearsing what would finally make everything feel settled.

Bring those thoughts gently to Jesus. Ask Him to help you return to the life before you and recognize His presence within it. There may be something good to receive or someone to love in a moment you might otherwise wish away.

Patient contentment can grow as we practice trusting that God is good, that He is with us, and that He continues to work. We can hold our hopes before Him while becoming more available to the gifts and responsibilities of today.

That kind of contentment has something to offer others. Our gratitude can help them notice goodness in their own lives. Our willingness to enjoy an ordinary day, even during a difficult season, can give them a glimpse of the joy we are finding in Jesus.

We can receive this life with thanksgiving because God is present in it, and He is still at work.

Prayer

Jesus,

Thank You for the life You have given me. You know the parts I enjoy and the places where I still wish things were different. Thank You that I can bring both into Your presence.

Give me Your eyes for my situation. Help me recognize the goodness I have been overlooking, the people I have been given to love, and the ways You continue to care for me. When disappointment narrows my attention, help me see more fully.

Teach me to be patiently content as I wait. Deepen my confidence in Your goodness and help me rest in Your presence. I trust that You are at work, even where I cannot yet recognize what You are doing.

Grow a heart of thanksgiving in me for the life I am living today. Help me receive its gifts, participate in Your work, and experience joy in You through whatever comes. As gratitude shapes the way I live, let it encourage others to recognize Your goodness, too.

In Your precious name, Amen.

Until Next Monday…

This week, ask Jesus to help you see your life through His eyes. Make room to notice what He has given you, where He is meeting you, and how you can join Him in the day before you.

When you find yourself waiting for something to change, pause long enough to receive one gift that is already here. Let thanksgiving become part of how you wait, and allow yourself to enjoy His presence along the way.

Until next Monday, keep bringing Him your hopes, keep looking for His goodness, and receive the life He has given you with a heart that is learning to give thanks.
